We collaborated with the Free University of Bolzano (Italy) on a research paper regarding Innovation Ecosystems and their critical traits and fundamental dynamics, analyzing well-known ecosystems like the research triangle in Europe or Silicon Valley in USA.
Innovation is a capillary value creation process described by various but similar concepts: networks, cluster, systems and innovation ecosystems. Thereby the innovation ecosystem theory is the broadest concept which calls for a deeper analysis regarding its development process. The aim of this research is to identify the development dynamics in the innovation ecosystems and to analyse if a development pattern can be identified. The analysis reveals that pluralities of dynamics are active that relate to a plurality of ecosystem in similar concepts. Despite the presence of path dependence, no clear development pattern could be found. Instead, the importance of visionary persons at the very beginning of an ecosystem birth could be observed.
