In addition we helped 3CI in raising research grants to further increase the R&D efforts on DiVino.

Outcomes

CEO
Patrick Pedevilla

YEAR
2013 - 2014

Activities

Patrick is an old school entrepreneur (Co-CEO of Norton Sports) active in the winter sports apparel and accessories with worldwide operations. He had the idea to innovate sports helmets, by adding a passive air-bag within the helmet. He got a PCT patent on the technical invention and came to us, to get help in transforming it into a business idea and innovation.
We helped Patrick in developing a business plan and financial plan (including a rough market research, an organizational and execution plan and a budget to reach certain milestones) that was needed to get a seed investment for his idea, in order to cover the first prototyping costs and first marketing expenses.

Outcomes

With the pitch and executive summary we reached out to several investors and after roughly six months we closed a 6-figure seed investment. With the investment he is getting the Airhelmet certified and ready to be sold on the markets.

BlinkistInnovating how people consume content and get more knowledgeable

CEO
Holger Seim

YEAR
2013 - 2014

Activities

On the B2B Sales engagement we analyzed the value proposition that Blinkist could be offering to potential corporate clients and with the help of the internal communication team defined a corporate sale pitch and tested local and international contacts. What we found out was that Blinkist was better off by growth hacking and using / leveraging B2C channels, which are cheaper and provide better conversion and profitability. During the activities we identified interesting channels for quick-win partnerships channels (very low cost, very high conversion) that have been developed in 2014.
On the International Fundraising we focused on the WP Outreach, since the Blinkist team already had exceptional finance skills. We identified interested investors in our network that were interested in investing in the current fundraising round.

Outcomes

Blinkist raised a low 7-figure investment in late 2013 lead by IBB (institutional fund from Berlin) and MGO Digital Ventures (CVC from Bamberg). Blinkist got covered by TechCrunch and TNW.

BookolicoThe Spotify of Indie Books

CEO
Giuseppe Spezzano

YEAR
2012 - 2013

Activities

We helped this young team to pivot from an existing indie author and reader community to a more business focused marketplace. The pivot has been done with the whole team, by reiterating ideas and thoughts on the market and identifying, what the stakeholder could need and how to cover that need.
The outcome was a marketplace, where the prices of indie books were set to almost 0 for unknown authors and therefore giving the opportunity to generate views of interested readers. At given traction milestones the authors were starting to gain revenues, both coming from ad supported revenues (from free users) and rev-share from subscription fees (from premium users).

Outcomes

Bookolico is developing the v2 product as defined in the pivot and with the help of the business and financial plan as an operational guidance trying to get their first proof of concept on the market and showing the sustainability of the business model.

idea!tailorsFramework to spark x-functional and x-cultural tech entrepreneurship

Activities

FFA IceVenture GbR, the Joint Venture focused on institutional projects that foster innovation, tech entrepreneurship and technology transfer, was contracted by local chamber of commerce in Italy and Austria to start a pre-incubation, idea structuring project, in order to create an attractive project and program for students and researchers on how to structure ideas into business ideas.

Process

During the 4-month project the teams learned and used tools delivered through a proprietary 7-step framework that comprised market research, customer validation tools, business modeling tools, team building resources and financial modeling tools.

Outcomes

150 students and researchers from 22 different faculties and from 32 nationalities were involved in 33 entrepreneurial teams. The pre-incubation project's goal was to raise the probability to convert some of the participants into joining acceleration and incubation programs across the regions, by lowering the entry barriers (fear of failing, financial risks and the opportunity cost of not getting hired at a corporation). During the 24 months after the project, 3 teams founded a company with the help of a local incubator, which gives the program a 10% pre-incubation throughput.

Outcomes

Innosparks never went online with a public release, because it didn't get enough interest and traction on the target markets. The analysis enabled to understand that the idea was not worth to invest into and build the product.

LACSInnovation for Soft-Air and Force-to-Force Military Training

CEO
Sergio Mian

YEAR
2013

Activities

FFA helped Sergio + Team to define the business case of LACS, by quantifying the total and targetable market for their innovation (based on 3 PCT patents) in both the ludic sector and military training sector. We modeled the military sector that has B2G (business 2 government) sales with long lead times and high margins and the ludic soft-air sector that has a typical B2C and B2B2C model with classic lead times and margins in retail markets. We analyzed domestic and international markets, digging into emerging markets and providing detailed SWOT and soft landing analyses.
We additionally provided some advice on fundraising, providing ideas on how to fund a non-venture backable business model (like partnering with distributors and governments).

Outcomes

FFA provided a detailed business and financial plan that both worked for defining the overall company's budget and as an operational guide to the LACS team to execute their innovation. LACS has been signing more and more governmental contracts for their training tools and are trying to close partnerships also for the North American and Asian markets.

The data is used by an algorithm, which can control the lighting (by trimming or augmenting) to either ensure safety or huge energy savings to whom is in charge of outdoor lighting.
The CEO and CTO came with very strong technical backgrounds, but lacked knowledge of venture-backed business models and strategy. FFA helped Lumineed first with a feasibility analysis of the innovation itself (trying to understand, if the market and implementation elements were aligned with the possibilities of the technology), second with the setup of a basic business and financial plan, which enabled the team to understand the potential and the metrics needed to follow a venture-backed startup route.

Outcomes

Lumineed is working on the prototyping and is now pitching its business case with a venture-backable business model. Estimated fundraising closing in early 2016.

Identified Problems
Every single new project of the client needs a final accounting, which includes information about delivered materials, new deliveries, extra costs for the materials used, actual transportation costs, etc. The accounting in addition needs to be reconciled with specific subsidiaries, in order to comply with financial accounting standards. Due to the complexity of the projects, this process was done manually, taking numerous hours of work from project engineers and therefore raising the cost structure (or lowering the project engineer's work efficiency) significantly.
The problem also brought a problem in the difficulty to control the economics of a subsidiary in real-time. In an engineering and production environment, in which projects can take up to 2-3 years to completion, more and more emphasis is put on the offering and planning phase in regard to pricing politics. This fact requires the organization have business intelligence tools and processes that are able to spot anomalies as early as possible.

Outcomes

By defining the exact processes (project and accounting processes) and the information needed at every step, we were able to automate 80% of this process, freeing up around 100 hours of project engineer's work every year. We managed the whole process definition and technical software implementation of the solution. In addition we implemented an integrated project planning and pricing system, where the headquarters could check actual pricing politics, discounts and profitability, long before the actual project accounting was done. The critical factors are checked by both analyzing both a high-level product/service category price and detailed product price filters that are based on standard prices in certain geographical areas.
